New & Noteworthy: Sustainable Sneakers from Uniform Standard

Brand new to Jules B, Uniform Standard is an East London footwear brand with a focus on sustainability, social responsibility and meticulous craftsmanship. We’re really excited about this fantastic new brand and the way that it’s changing the face of footwear and fashion through its modern values and equally cutting edge style.

Founded in 2018 by designer Stephen Galea with the aim to create a series of timeless sneaker designs that would transcend trends and seasons, the brand has come a long way in such a short time. Each signature Series iteration is designed with longevity in mind, which means that whichever style you choose, they’re sure to stand the test of time.

What’s so special about the brand?

Uniform Standard combines minimal British design with premium Italian leather and recycled components. From the beginning they’ve been committed to sustainable product development, with each step of the design and production process taking social and environmental responsibility into consideration.

Successfully creating conscious and sustainable footwear that never compromises on style or quality, Uniform Standard is an exceptional new brand with a unique story behind it, and a production process that aligns with its ‘less and better’ philosophy.

Expert craftsmanship

Each Uniform Standard shoe is crafted in Porto, home of traditional Portugese shoemaking. At a family-run factory that prides itself on treating its employees fairly, the shoes are meticulously handcrafted by expert shoemakers. This allows essential skills to be passed down to the next generation and supports the local economy and culture.

High-quality leathers

The brand selects only the highest quality full grain leather, nubuck and suedes, each chosen for their texture, colour and durability. By working with Italian tanneries that are audited and certified by The Leather Working Group (LWG), they ensure that their materials have been produced following good environmental practice. Uniform Standard’s main tanneries are rated Gold, the highest achievable score.

Recycled outsoles

Each outsole is produced using recycled materials such as rubber, cork and rice husk shells for the lowest environmental impact. Though this is a more costly and time-consuming process, the brand believes the extra cost is worth it.

Recycled footbeds

The leather lined padded footbed in each sneaker is made from 100% recycled high density polyurethane foam, designed for superior comfort and breathability. They also have an active carbon coating to enhance odour resistance.

Recycled insole boards

Every shoe also features a flexible insole board, specially developed using 100% recycled cellulose fibres that have no added dyes and effectively wick perspiration away from the foot.

Plastic-free packaging

Each shoe box is made from recycled kraft card, which is 100% recyclable. These boxes are put together using a small amount of water-based glue and are produced close to the brand’s footwear factory to avoid the long-distance shipping of packaging materials.

Recycled coffee cup paper

As well as recycled and recyclable boxes, Uniform Standard also utilise innovative paper made of fully recycled material repurposed from disposable paper coffee cups. Using special CupCycling technology, the polyethylene coating from the cups is removed so that 90% of the cup can be converted into FSC-certified paper fibre and the remaining 10% of plastic waste is recycled, meaning zero landfill.

Carbon neutral shipping

Finally, in order to limit the impact that customer’s orders have on the environment, all Uniform Standard deliveries are Carbon Neutral. Through the GoGreen initiative, Uniform Standard make a corresponding contribution to various high-quality climate protection initiatives. Recent projects the brand has contributed to include a wind power plant in Nicaragua, a biomass power plant in India, ceramic water purifiers in Cambodia and Reforestation in Uganda.
