The Mercury Prize 2014

The annual awards show for Album of the Year was held on Wednesday 29th October at The Roundhouse in London.

Renowned for it’s obscure nominees and winners, the Mercury awards has been criticised in the past of awarding the prize to the lesser known bands and artists despite popularity and public favourites. This year alternative band Young Fathers took away the prize for their album Dead which fuses the Nigerian and Scottish backgrounds of the three band members in a genre they themselves refer to as ‘psychedelic hip-hop boy band’. The band beat the more recognised acts FKA Twigs and Bombay Bicycle Club to what The Mercury Prize considers to be the most significant album of the year.
