Opening to the public last week was the long awaited movie adaptation of American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel ‘The Great Gatsby’. Set in 1922 in the fictional town of West Egg on Long Island, New York, the story revolves around the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his driven passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Starring and narrated by Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), the story creates a wonderful vision of the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties, in which themes of decadence, idealism and alarming excess within society make for what has been called a ‘cautionary tale’ about the American Dream.
The movie has been directed by Australian Baz Lurhmann, the fifth of his professional career, and has been elegantly shot in 3D for modern cinema. Lurhmann’s film focuses on decades past, with the sets and character’s costumes following suit, but a modern spin has been cleverly integrated into the movie’s star-studded soundtrack that was executively-produced by Jay-Z, containing exclusive contributions from Jay-Z himself, Lana Del Ray, Florence & The Machine, along with a host of others.
Along with the acclaimed soundtrack, the movie offers up a feast for the vintage fashion enthusiast. Costumes have always played a large part in Lurhmann’s movies, mainly due to the contribution of his Oscar-winning production designer wife Catherine Martin, who has collaborated with Miuccia Prada to create over 40 costumes for numerous lavish scenes.
