The Event Report: A History of the Met Gala

The Met Gala; formally known as the Costume Institute Gala or simply the best party of the year, is a an annual fundraising gala that is taken place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May the 1st of every year. Known as the “black tie extravaganza” the Met Ball is held to raise money for the Costume Institute. With an attendance of celebrity and fashion hosts, Met Gala changes themes each year to showcase the museum’s extraordinary holdings. From the very first Met Gala for 1971-1972 that held the Fashion Plate theme, to the upcoming Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons theme of 2017, the ball is renowned for their extraordinary red carpet looks that are specifically chosen from leading designers to compliment the set themes. With renowned designers, celebrities, fashion figures, icons and A-Listers, the Met Gala ball never fails to impress by showcasing the most exquisite gowns and costumes that leads to the ball being the most talked-about event of the year. One of the most iconic red carpet looks in Met Gala’s history, Rihanna arrived in a glistening bright yellow gown made by Chinese couture designer by Guo Pei for the Chine: Through The Looking Glass themed Met Gala in 2015 and she looked absolutely show-stopping. The enormous gown featured tonal fur trims, floral swirls in gold and an extremely long silhouette with a complimentary headpiece that required three wranglers to carry. Talk about Gala extravaganza! Underneath the jaw-dropping gown was hidden a petite mini dress adorned in a hot-pink hue.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Never fails to impress, Sarah Jessica Parker embraced her beloved amongst all the women Carrie Bradshaw character in one glamorous gown. In 2014, Sarah attended the strict white tie theme at the Met Gala ball in a black and ivory Oscar de la Renta gown that featured a windowpane design on the skirt and the iconic autograph everyone is still talking about today. The very-much glamorous actress complimented her fascinating look with glistening accessories and she most definitely was the star of the show.

Amber Heard

Amber Heard looked breathtaking in her Zac Posen gown attending the Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations themed Met Gala ball in 2012. Curve hugging gown in an elegant orchid hue was finished with an intriguing train and glistening accessories that looked marvellous on the actress.


Beyonce turned heads at the 2011 Met Gala Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty theme in her glistening gown by Emilio Pucci. The tight-fitting gown that emphasized her curvy figure effortlessly featured gold embroidery and an elegant cut out décolletage finished with a delicate fishtail hem. Accompanied by her husband; rapper Jay-Z, Beyonce looked fascinating with her hair tucked into an elegant low-bun.
