Dubbed the fashion ‘graduation’, The Council of Fashion Designers of America awards ceremony has come around again, and of course this marks a year since Rihanna wore that bare-it-all metallic dress and headscarf ensemble that blew our minds! One of the most important nights on the fashion calendar, the ceremony brings together a host of famous New York labels and their designers among certain celebrity muses.
With the reigning queen of fashion, American Vogue Editor and biggest style critic, Anna Wintor in attendance the ceremony is always sure to showcase an array of exquisite, elegant and often eccentric outfits for fashion-fiends to covet over in the following weeks. After making their way down the red-carpet, attendees were in for a real treat, witnessing the hosting delights of comic, James Cordon and snacking on mini just-about-everything!
Triumphant at the awards ceremony were The Olsen Twins, whose brand, The Row (established in 2006) won best womenswear designer and is iconic for its nod to minimalism and use of sophisticated cuts and fabrics. Less humble was the menswear victory, which went to Tom Ford after the designer picked up the lifetime achievement award at last year’s ceremony. Ford’s anything-but-modest speech: “It’s good to know there is life after a Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Following Ford’s interesting acceptance speech a number of journalists have critiqued this year’s CFDA’s. The New York Times blogged about the event stating that self-absorption was on full display and further, that host Cordon made a number of distasteful jokes such as “asking me to host the CFDAs is like asking Terry Richardson (a risqué fashion photographer) to host your daughter’s birthday party!” Nonetheless, Lifetime Achievement winner Betsey Johnson (aged 72) lightened the mood by cart wheeling across the stage to accept her award whilst Fashion Icon winter Pharrell Williams spoke for 15-minutes about the importance of fashion for inspiration.
We wish we could have attended to witness the all the fierce-fashion action but instead the fashion team have put together a selection of our favourite (and to make it more exciting, most questionable) looks from the evening sported by some of America’s elite.
