Tis’ the season to officially be jolly, and what better way to kick off the festivities than with a mug of traditional mulled wine. However, this isn’t just any mulled wine… From Baked Bree, this particular recipe sounds as though it might be the most alluring, sweetest, taste bud tingling and heart-warming mulled wine there ever was.
Taken from a German restaurant, the recipe has been altered and played with until each exact ingredient and quantity could combine together to create a taste that you won’t be in a hurry to forget. Infuse your house with a sweet smelling aroma and welcome Christmas in with open arms, and with this hug in a mug.
1 orange
16 cloves
6 litres of white wine
1 cup of sugar
½ cup of orange juice
1 lemon
8 cinnamon sticks, broken
14 whole allspice seeds
6 cardamom pods, crushed
For serving:
Fresh nutmeg
Lemon slices
Cinnamon sticks
Stud the orange with cloves and then slice in half. In a large pot, slow cooker or Dutch oven, add the wine, sugar and orange juice. Add the studded orange, lemon and spices. Simmer on a very low heat, stirring occasionally. If using a slow cooker, set on LOW for 2 hours. Serve with grated nutmeg, cinnamon sticks and lemon slices if desired.
