In 2014 the first whiskey to be produced in the Lake District in 200 years will go into production. The home of the distillery will be a renovated Victorian Model Farm by the river Derwent and close to the picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake. The water used in the distilling process will travel down the Sprinkling Tarn surrounding the foothills of Scafell Pike, the highest of the lakes peaks. The whiskey will gain its character and depth from the heart of the Lake District whilst the maturing process will ensure a world class single malt is produced.
With a team of experts the whiskey will be produced on a small artisan scale offering outstanding quality and taste. Cumbria offers the perfect conditions for whiskey distilling and The Lakes Distillery aim to create a whiskey steeped in history whilst being environmentally friendly. Using quality sherry casks and bourbon barrels, the whiskey will mature at its best whilst the company plan to experiment with other woods letting the spirit age for a minimum of three years which will be available in 2017.
Until then the company have blended a range of whiskeys from the British Isles, the aim to make the perfectly balanced spirit. Blended whiskey is a new concept and the process results in a taste that can be described as slightly smokey, sweet and fruity, nutty with hints of spice. This whiskey named ‘The One‘ is available online at The Lakes Distillery.
