The phenomenal success of New York based lifestyle brand, Alice + Olivia, all began with a single pair of trousers. With no fashion experience or training Stacey Bendet, co-founder of Alice + Olivia has taken the world by storm offline and online with intricate prints and stunning silhouettes. As we enter A/W ’16, we look at the endeavours of this contemporary designer brand and celebrate their main inspiration – femininity.
As, she calls herself, a “crazy girl on rollerblades”, Stacey Bendet does not have a traditional fashion background. Studying International Relations and French at the University of Pennsylvania, she delved into the industry after creating a pair of striking slim-fit pants which gained a lot of attention from passersby. In 2002, along with a college classmate, she founded Alice + Olivia, naming the brand after their mothers, Stacey’s designs have always been influenced by women of culture. After a show like-no-other (the models wore only a pair of Alice + Olivia trousers and covered in bouquets of flowers) Stacey and the brand gained national attention and she launched into designing a full collection to be sold in New York’s finest retailers, Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman.
Educating herself on the mechanics of making a billion-dollar fashion business was strenuous, but Alice + Olivia has become an established clothing brand around the world. Stacey has used her background in graphic design to compose ornamented fabrics, dynamic in style with a feminine touch, the brand’s trademark patterns are pieces of decoration to wear at any opportunity. Stacey has stayed as the CEO and Creative Director of Alice + Olivia from the start, as well as a mother of three, wife and yoga enthusiast, she is a great supporter and ambassador for crucial charities, including Baby Buggy a New York charity that provides essential gear and services to families.
As Alice + Olivia continues to gain significant recognition, it also continues to grow – the brand now carries accessories, shoes and handbags alongside the apparel collections, which incorporates a career focused line and Air, a selection of clean-cut designs for the minimalist-women. The new season is, as Alice + Olivia likes to call it, “an ode to the late 70’s”, a combination of their signature sleek and full silhouettes through skirts, dresses and coats with baroque floral prints, offering the modern woman an elegant and playful look during Autumn and Winter. Here at Jules B we adore the collections Alice + Olivia deliver each season, providing women with items for everyday and every occasion, and are in anticipation to see what Stacey Bendet and the brand create for their 15th anniversary in Spring/Summer ’17.
