British Fashion Awards 2014

Last Monday night, the annual British Fashion Awards took place at London’s Coliseum. The prestigious event pulled in a host of much celebrated fashion industry favourites including designers, models, editors and photographers, alongside the A-list of film and music, to watch the battle for the awards commence.

With the nominees and guests greeted with a red carpet sprinkled in Swarovski crystals, the night was hosted by Jack Whitehall and began with a tearful Victoria Beckham scooping ‘Brand of the Year’ beating off strong competition from the likes of Burberry, Tom Ford and Stella McCartney.

Other fashion design winners included Marques Almeida for ‘Best Emerging Womenswear Designer’ in light of the high popularity of their recent Topshop capsule collection, whilst Craig Green was awarded the ‘Best Emerging Menswear Designer’ accolade.

The biggest award however – ‘Designer of the Year’ – went to Erdem, who regularly dresses the Duchess of Cambridge in his elegant, ultra feminine designs. Whilst J.W. Anderson took home the ‘Best Menswear Designer’ gong. Thanking his family, friends and design team for “believing in him”, he fought off competition from design heavyweights Christopher Bailey, Tom Ford and Paul Smith to receive the title.

Poppy Delevingne paid an emotional tribute to her little sister Cara as she awarded her with the ‘Model of the Year’ prize, which proves well deserved after fronting major campaigns for Chanel, Fendi, Burberry and H&M amongst others in the last 12 months. Cara was quickly flown in from Australia in Karl Lagerfeld’s private jet with best friend Kendall Jenner to attend the evening and accept the gong, whilst Harry Styles passed on his previous years ‘Style Icon’ accolade to Emma Watson.

To top off the night, John Galliano made a surprise appearance to present Anna Wintour with her ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’. Wintour was moved to tears as Galliano addressed the audience with a moving speech about their long-term friendship and her outstanding charity work. Suitably decked in the first dress produced by Galliano in his new position as Creative Director for Maison Martin Margiela, Wintour urged people to ‘use fashion as a medium and to inspire and effect good in the world’ during her acceptance speech.
