The countdown to one of the most hotly anticipated fashion launches of the year, Balmain for H&M, is almost over as the collection hits stores nationwide on the 5th of November. To mark the arrival of the collaboration, New York provided the backdrop for the Balmain x H&M launch party featuring an extravagant runway show. Opened by none other than Kendall Jenner and closed by supermodel Gigi Hadid, with Fashion royalty Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Alessandra Ambrosio and Joan Smalls on the catwalk, the ‘Balmain Army’ was truly out in force. With an ‘army’ of celebrity models and fans, Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s Creative Director, has built up huge momentum for the range.
One of the most publicised and sought after collections H&M have produced up until now, the no holds barred Balmain campaign has sent social media in to overdrive. No simplistic campaign film here, instead Balmain x H&M have released a behind the scenes teaser of a music video which is set to be released in full when the collection drops early November.
The Parisian fashion house is known for its ultra luxurious aesthetics; embellished tuxedo jackets and dresses emblazoned with pearls and sequins. The collaboration has been praised for its similarities to the Balmain mainline collection with H&M pieces bearing staggering similarity to previous seasons at Balmain. Featuring trademark 80’s glamour and exuberant maximalism which has become synonymous with the Balmain brand in its mainline pieces, the collection showcases the brands trademark waist-cinching silhouettes, bold shoulders and short hemlines. An array of brocade, beads and gold details adorned on top of luxe looking fabrics evoke the military touches Olivier Rousteing features so often at Balmain.
Accessories are going BIG in the Balmain x H&M collection, think oversized jewellery with armour like rings and multi strand torque like necklaces and bracelets, statement earrings and bejewelled clutches reinforcing the partywear feel of the collection. In an interview with Vogue UK earlier this year, Rousteing describe Balmain women as, “strong..women who are going to change the world.” He certainly expresses this in his designs for the label.
The collection has received some criticism as unlike previous H&M collaborations which have placed a strong importance on affordability, the limited edition embellished dress worn by model Gigi Hadid to a NYFW party is priced at a penny short of £400.
