With all its beautiful sweet and savoury treats, afternoon tea is the ultimate indulgence. We recently tried the Afternoon Tea at Tees Valley’s Wynyard Hall and were left awe-inspired by the impressive surroundings and delicious menu on offer.
Wynyard Hall is located on the outskirts of Durham and is a beautiful historic building surrounded by an expansive estate. Afternoon tea was served in the Library, an elaborate interior that takes you aback when you get your first glimpse of its opulent gilded features and plush furnishings. A glistening chandelier hangs from the ceiling, beautifully crafted bookshelves line the walls and a grand piano draws your attention to the centre of the room. On this sunny day in July, light spills in from the windows and gives the room a bright, airy and welcoming feel.
Upon arrival we were sat by the window, giving us the perfect vantage point from which to admire the view onto the estate. Outside, wedding guests were celebrating and enjoying the beautiful weather and it was a lovely scene to take in as we enjoyed our tea, which we selected from an extensive menu of Newby teas. A selection of traditional, herbal and loose leaf blends are on offer, but we opted for a pot of English Breakfast and a refreshing Elderflower and Lemon. You can also enjoy freshly ground coffee, or upgrade for a spot of fizz or a glass of malt whisky.
We sampled two different styles of afternoon tea on offer at Wynyard Hall, with each including a wonderful array of sandwiches, pastries and sweet treats. The Traditional Afternoon Tea was presented on an impressive tiered stand full of sandwiches, scones and dainty cakes, while the Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea was made up of a delicious looking selection of savoury treats.
To our delight, everything tasted as good as it looked and we were very impressed by the fresh, innovative twist that Wynyard Hall bring to their afternoon tea. Options such as Salmon and Wye Valley Asparagus Tarte and Rare Breed Pork and Sage Sausage Roll were a refreshing change from the typical finger sandwiches and the flavours were beautiful. Egg Mayonnaise and Cress was served in a brioche bun, while Coronation Chicken was served in the softest flatbread – a delightful combination.
The Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea included savoury treats such as a flavourful Salt Beef and Pickle Rye Bread, a Pork and Sage Sausage Roll, an incredibly tasty Raised Breed Pork Pie, a Ham Knuckle Terrine, Piccalilli and Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese. There was also Tea Cake, Fruit Loaf, Custard Tart and a Fruit Scone with homemade jam and clotted cream. The team at Wynyard Hall really know what they’re doing when it comes to flavours, with each dish complementing the next perfectly. The Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea includes a great range of classic favourites and creative new dishes, all of them delicious.
Next up from the Traditional Afternoon Tea were the scones, which were quite simply perfect! With a burnished golden top and a light, fluffy interior, they were gorgeous served with a smear of homemade jam and a dollop of clotted cream. Cheese, fruit and plain scones were served as part of the Traditional Afternoon Tea, so there’s something for everyone here.
Finally we moved onto the cakes, and what a delight they were! The Rhubarb Compote topped with meringue was sweet and creamy, while the chocolate cheesecake looked like it belonged on a Parisian patisserie counter, and was so beautiful it seemed a shame to cut into it. The carrot cake was moist and heavenly and the delicate lemon macaron was the perfect combination of tangy and sweet. Don’t worry if you can’t manage everything on the cake stand at once, as the wonderful team will provide you with a box so you can enjoy the rest of your treats later. We certainly weren’t going to let these scones and cakes go to waste!
Afternoon Tea at Wynyard Hall was a wonderful experience and was the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
