AW13 has seen the a variety of trends storm the catwalks and pavements, however one of the most stand-out looks has been the reprise of punk. Tartan has made its transition from the Highlands, to the 80s punks, to school uniforms and now it has been reworked for our fashion taste buds. The past few seasons have seen elements of ladylike elegance influencing everything from colour to cut, and tartan has been no exception. AW13 welcomed in a more grown-up punk, one who wears her tartan with pumps and clutch bags instead of Mohicans and biker boots.
The AW13 McQ Alexander McQueen collection heralds the tartan trend with an outstanding collection featuring leather, chiffon and lycra. The globally recognised fashion house has played with punk for years, most notably with the late designers first mainline collection called Highland Rape. Controversial, rebellious and provocative, McQueen’s debut collection in 1995 also came to be definitive of his approach to design. Highland Rape embodied the designers aesthetic wholly, featuring daring, sheer pieces and an unreserved passion for inspiration and conceptual design.
The traditional red tartan can seem overbearing for newcomers to the tartan trend, so working it into your day to day look can seem like a challenge. Try pairing tartan print t-shirts with black skinny jeans (or leather leggings for AW13 trend fanatics) or pare down a tartan dress with a black jacket and heels. If you want to work the trend without working the whole look, accessories are a great way to tap into the new season hype. Designers such as Riccardo Forconi and Vivienne Westwood are our go-to’s for studs, tartan finishes and hardware accessories.
Of course, punk is so much more than tartan. This season’s woman complements her tartan with leather panelling, chiffon and plenty of tough accessories. Shop designers such as Iro, Helmut Lang and MSGM for standout pieces to complete the tartan look, will you wear this trend to the extreme with leather luxe finishes or will you tone it down with sweet pumps and a daytime tote bag? The choice is yours, however you wear it you’re sure to stand out in this season’s new-look rebel fabric tartan.
