Elettra Rossellini Weidmann fronting the Hoss a/w '09 collection

Elettra Wiedman Rossellini, 26, is the beautiful, big-haired, brainiac daughter

of legendary actress Isabella Rossellini and Jon Wiedmann,

a Harvard-educated executive at Microsoft who was a model himself back in the day.

(Talk about good genes.) He and Rossellini met on a Calvin Klein shoot –

possibly the coolest and aesthetically pleasing, how-did-your-parents-get-together? story ever.

425.mendes.dornan.ckad.lc.061709

A completely unnecessary gratuitous shot of Jamie Dornan and Eva Mendes modelling for the most recent Calvin Klein campaign.

The term ‘model student’ is sickeningly applicable to this girl on so many levels.

Masters in Biochemistry? Check. Fluent in Fench and Italian? Double check.

Face of international fashion and beauty campaigns such as Lancome, Abercrombie

and most recently Hoss? Check, check, check… You get the idea.

The story goes that the president of Lancome saw one of her teen modelling

shots (taken by iconic American photographer Bruce Weber. Who else?)

and went after signing her up oblivious of the “mum connection” as Elettra puts it.

Isabella Rossellini - the original and the best.

While this is a LITTLE hard to believe considering Mamma Rossellini

was the face of Lancome for 14 years – it isn’t difficult to see

why the brand fell over themselves getting her on board.

Lancome is coincidentally my beauty brand of choice. Their eye make-up

remover and tinted moisturiser are the BEST. Plus, the Lancome

girls in Boots of Eldon Square in Newcastle are the most helpful and

lovely sales team and I wouldn’t dream of changing brands or going

anywhere else for my beauty fixes. (Except Space NK for the odd thing.)

Get all your Lancome treats RIGHT NOW from Boots.com and

keep collecting those points. I heart my Advantage Card.

Rossellini the Younger’s saint-like status (doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, trains five or six times a week)

is elevated even further with a reputation as a genuinely conscientious ‘green’ model.

She insists that Lancôme offset the carbon footprint created by the

air travel she does for them.

‘Our entire system of living is built on an un-environmentally friendly model,’

she says. ‘I’m studying it so I can understand more how I can help big

companies change, or help governments change, or people change their lifestyle.’

Brains and beauty and big on saving the planet. Elettra Rossellini - our new girl crush.

If all this sounds too good to be true and you’re beginning to think

– life isn’t fair is it? Some chicks really do have it all. My life is rubbish etc etc.

Bear this fact in mind: one of the most interesting things about this super-girl

(and something she doesn’t bring up in interviews) is that from the ages of 12-17

she suffered from scoliosis and had to wear a back brace for 23 hours a day. Every day.

Suddenly, the charmed life doesn’t look so charming after all.

On a happier note.! Elettra is a huge fan of the Spanish label Hoss.

She was the face of last season’s collection and continues to fly the flag

for the label this fantastic label that never fails to deliver interesting and unique s

tatement pieces you’ll have in your wardrobe forever. Jules B is proud to

present the Hoss spring/summer 2010 collection – due in-store any day.

ELEMENTARY DEAR WATSON!

sherlock
Film still from Sherlock Holmes – Guy Ritchie’s latest blockbuster

You’ll have to be living under a rock at the moment not to have heard

about Guy Richie’s reworking of the Sherlock Holmes story. Putting

a modern spin on Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous character

Robert Downey Jr’s (Iron Man, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) portrayal turns

the traditionally twee detective into something a tad more dynamic,

think less tea and scones and more cloak and dagger.

jude-law-sherlock-holmes-movie-poster-02
Downey surprised critics by picking up a best actor gong at the Golden Globes last week.

Jude Law (Rage, The Aviator) stars as Holmes’s trusty steed Watson,

a doctor and war veteran that is a formidable ally for the detective.

Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Mean girls) plays Irene Adler,

the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and has maintained a tempestuous

relationship with the detective.

Rachel McAdam’s as seen on vogue.com

Mark Strong (RocknRolla, Stardust)

stars as the trio’s mysterious new adversary Lord Henry Blackwood,

an aristocrat dabbling in the occult to get others to do his bidding.

Already receiving critical acclaim due to Downey winning the best actor gong at last weeks Golden Globes

coupled with an almost endless back catalogue of material to base further instalments on,

Mr Ritchie is definitely onto a winner with this franchise.

Teaming with action and protagonists that you can really engage with,

potentially the Holmes brand could be up there with Mr Bond.

Similarly to 007 Mr Holmes has his own catch phrases, gadgets and very suave sense of style.

If whilst watching the film you find yourself admiring the traditionally English-dandy style

that is a constant throughout the film,

then here are a few ideas as to how to replicate the look with a modern twist…

herringbone jkt

For the gents try mixing tailored, slim fitting formal wear that have a vintage feel.

Texture and layering  is key with this look, experiment with different checks and tweed.

If that isn’t your thing then try heavier fabrics like wool in neutral colours like greys, and blacks with a splash of colour.

Being smart is vital to this look, ideal for work or a night out the key is to dress your best.

Take inspiration from vintage inspired collections such as Holland Esquire and Hackett.

For ladies the concept is exactly the same, tailoring to the waist is vital to the look,

corset dresses or tops along with a full shaped silhouette on bottom will give a very voluptuous, glamorous feel.

Accessorise with scarves and bags with embellished details,  a hint of fur will give the look a

finish that ticks all the boxes.

Jules B in FHM

We’re used to seeing Premiership footballers in our stores

but it’s not every day there are photographers and the pictures

end up on FHM magazine’s website. Here’s Anton Ferdinand and

Nyron Nosworthy (looking dapper in Holland Esquire clothing

and Bailey hats) posing in our Jesmond store during a fitting

for the SAFC charity fashion event Fashion Strikes that Jules B

are sponsoring. All the lads on the team taking part have been

coming in this week to get measured up and suited&booted for the

catwalk show. (There were lots of volunteers to help out in

the shop on those days now I think about it… Funny that.)

We hope to raise LOTS of money for the SAFC Foundation so a

big THANK YOU to the players and everyone behind the scenes

at the club for inviting Jules B to be part of this fantastic event

which we have supported in the past and hope to do so again

in the future. Read more about the event at FHM and enter

the competition for a chance to win tickets. It’s going to be a

brilliant night and we’ll tell you all about it (plus maybe some

exclusive backstage snaps) right here on the blog next week.

Beauties and the Barbour

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Burberry, Mulberry, Aquascutum – all luxury British brands

that haven’t always been in fashion favour yet now have a place

amongst the most coveted high-end fashion labels on the planet.

Something similar has been happening to another brand that’s as

British as bulldogs and wet weather.

What’s so intriguing about this particular label’s ascension into the upper echelons of cool

is that they’ve pulled it off without even trying.

Almost without even knowing.

No relaunch, rebrand or restructure.

Barbour didn’t spot one of its wax jackets on a super-cool young thing

in Dalstonand think let’s jump on this immediately and hire an Italian designer

to sex up the collection and thrust hundreds of freebies at more super-cool

young things (but this time from Celebrity Land) and see where this goes.

Instead it has been quietly getting on with streamlining its silhouettes

and ramping up its technical credentials to produce a range of closer fitting

and better looking coats and jackets for a new generation who want

proper fashionwith function. And that all important ‘heritage’.

(Marketing men take note: THAT you cannot buy.)

Now there may be a newer breed of Barbour clothing on the scene

but it’s still the original styles that pack the biggest style punch.

And according to Vogue’s Emma Elwick – the older the better.

She wore a particularly voluminous exemplar over a sequined vest and

hot pants when she was DJ-ing at Glastonbury.

And we think that’s the key to Barbour’s re-newed popularity.

They’re a badge of honour and show that you’re into your music

and rough it at festivals up and down the country while still looking chic.

A Barbour jacket is the ideal partner in crime to Hunter wellies.

Festivals are no longer only for kids and hippies, they’re a veritable fashion parade

for the biggest players in the industry. No longer all about the music,

the UK festivals in particular have got more to do with whose wearing what

as opposed to whose playing after whom. And the who’s who of the fashion world just love

getting down and dirty in their Barbour jackets.

“It probably started off among young boys, who are also working flat caps

with their skinny jeans and un-named plimsoles. It’s the Hackney Farmers uniform,”

says Elwick, “but girls are getting in on it too, although the wax means the jackets

become a bit smelly to be too mainstream.”

Not a problem as the new Barbour ranges have a lot more going for them than the

old-school wax pieces. Alexa Chung, Lily Allen, Kelly Osborne and Geldofs Peaches and Pixie

have all been seen wearing a host of Barbour jackets over pretty party dresses.

Other glamorous fans of the country-chic look include Gela Nash-Taylor, co-creative

director of Juicy Couture who divides her time between homes in LA

and a stunning Elizabethan manor house in Wiltshire.

“The dressing up at Wraxall is part of my fantasy life. I dress extra English

when I’m here. At night, I love to wear something long. For a walk outside in the winter,

I wear a pair of Gucci stretch pants, a ruffled pale-yellow cashmere sweater,

a Barbour, and a piece of fur. I even wear Wellies now. I love Wellies—

the real ones: green Hunters. I didn’t ‘get’ them before,

so I tried to spray paint them and make them more edgy, more fashion,

but now I know they should just be green.”

We at Jules B hold Barbour very close to our Northern hearts.

We were selling Barbour when the only people wearing them were

genuine hunts-folk. Why? Because they’re authentic, beautifully made

and part of the history of this little corner of the world. A trip to the Barbour factory

in South Shields (and the brilliant outlet store) is a rite of passage

for anyone from the North East. The fact that Barbour is hot now is merely a bonus.

Far superior to Belstaff the Italian outerwear brand

and what’s more patriotic in these uncertain times than flying the flag for a

distinctly British brand? To read more about the history of Barbour and more

entertaining rural rhetoric go their official site.

A new flagship store on the (also recently resurrected) Carnaby Street in London

plus appearing on the rails at Dover Street Market equals you’reofficially going places.

If more proof were needed, an official stamp of approval from Lisa Armstrong

Fashion Editor at The Times surely seals the deal.

After attending a brain-storming dinner with various other editors,

buyers and industry players to discuss the future of ‘heritage’ fashion brands,

Armstrong waxed lyrical about Barbour in particular.

Dover Street Market

Dover Street Market. 17-18 Dover St London, W1S 4LT

“The Barbour revival is a triumph of street style over marketing,

substance over flash, customisation over mass logos.

It couldn’t be more comforting in a recession

— perhaps that’s why it took many of us at that dinner back to the glory days

of what was happening in British fashion in the early 80s.

A little bit ugly, quite whiffy, 100 per cent British.

Let’s hope it doesn’t change.”
