Friday, October 30th, 2009Who Watch Where When
Friday, October 30th, 2009
When Drapers Record magazine interviewed Marco Mavilla, the stylish and
cutting-edge Italian who founded ToyWatch, he revealed a love of traditional
Savile Row tailoring, Eric Clapton and most surprisingly – fake watches.!
Read the rest of the interview to find out how he made his ToyWatch idea a reality
and why he chose London as the location for the latest ToyWatch store.
The new ToyWatch. Due instore any day now. The Twin ToyWatch
has two chic faces to choose from so you can flip your watch over and
get a different look. You can pre-order your Twin ToyWatch at Jules B
online now before they hit the shops or appear on the website.
Email fashion@julesb.co.uk or call +(44) 191 281 7855.
If like Marco you’re a fan of Hermes you should check out their
beautiful website with it’s whimsical illustrations, gorgeous gift ideas
and a fun memory game you can play online using the poshest Hermes
playing cards I’ve ever seen. This website is everything a luxury fashion
brand site should be – looks good, inspiring, a delight to browse around
and a memorable experience even if you don’t buy a thing.
A vintage Rolex is Marco’s guilty pleasure and looking at the latest styles
on the Rolex website (which could learn a few things from the Hermes site)
you can see where he gets a lot of his inspiration for the ToyWatch
styles from… But as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery -
so a ToyWatch is the the ultimate compliment to his beloved Rolexes.
Back in the Snood
Friday, October 23rd, 2009
It’s official. Snoods are stylish again. They’re boho-chic at it’s best and in this
weather, any extra warmth is a good thing. Whether you wear it wrapped
round your head or draped round your neck, a snood is a brilliant alternative
to a scarf this season : on-trend AND it stays put.
This Yves Salomon rabbit fur wide snood is especially luxurious.
Wear with the matching fur headband for full-on Doctor Zhivago styles.
Elegant and totally decadent. Check out our full range of Yves Salomon
fur accessories. Snoods, scarves, wraps, hats – perfect to pull over luxe
layers of knitwear.
NB: Any fur used on clothing sold in our stores and on Jules B
online is a by-product and we only work with brands that
meet our standards of ethically sourced materials.
Paul Smith V the Fashion World
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
Paul Smith gives good quote. He doesn’t shy away from speaking
his mind even when the topic of conversation (naturally) turns
to the very industry in which he made his name. Interviewed in the
Daily Telegraph this month, Smith declared:
“I’ve always preferred the creative process of designing and selling
clothes to the idea of putting on a poncey fashion show. It’s their
(other designers) 15 minutes of fame: pure, self-indulgent theatre. How
many girls were there this year in horns or neck braces with bare breasts?
It wouldn’t matter if they didn’t take it all so seriously, but the
fashion world is a dangerous, superficial and fickle place.”
(Nowhere was this more evident this season than at the fashion house of
Ungaro where Lindsay Lohan has been appointed ‘artistic director.’ Her
first collection was universally panned and a good example of what not
to do if you’re a brand seeking commercial as well as critical success.)
I’d love to hear what Smith thinks about Ungaro’s ‘collaboration’…
He certainly tells it like it is which doesn’t normally happen on planet
fashion. But then Paul Smith is no ordinary designer, he’s an
authority (as well as national institution) when it comes to dressing.
A down-to-earth Yorkshireman who has built his global brand
without resorting to gimmickry or soul-less celebrity
endorsements. He designs real clothes with real people in mind.
And the besotted British public thank him for it.
His “classic with a twist” concept of suiting for men (or “Saville
Row meets Mr Bean” as smith puts it) is still a winning formula:
serious-looking suits with a lime-green trim or a flashy lining,
and plain white shirts with his signature candy-striped motif
beneath the cuffs. Since 1998, Sir Paul has been winning over the
women-folk too with his quirky separates, and tailored skirt
and trouser suits. At Jules B we stock a wide selection of the
Paul Smith clothing and accessory ranges for men and women.
His latest venture has nothing to do with fashion. He’s designed a
limited edition Evian bottle featuring the cult multi-stripe motif.
A surprising collaboration that according to a short video on the official
Evian website came about simply because he was asked and he’s
been drinking Evian since he was 11. Evian’s tag line is ‘Live Young’
and the Paul Smith philosophy is to always remain childlike
(not childish he’s quick to add.) So I guess it makes sense.
We might not sell bottles of water at Jules B but we do have a great
selection of fun and quirky Paul Smith accessories featuring the
famous multi-coloured multi-stripe motif. Browse our full range.
In the Telegraph interview he goes on to proclaim that he “wouldn’t
bring in a celebrity to work at Paul Smith in a million years,
actually, make that a trillion”, says all politicians are “as bad
as eachother now, incredibly shallow and full of meaningless words,”
and admits to almost turning down the knighthood he recieved
in 2000 until pride took over. Witty and honest – two words you
don’t normally associate with fashion interviews, especially
celebrity ones. But then there’s nothing normal about
Sir Paul Smith, the man or the work. And long may it last.
Toy Watches have the X Factor
Monday, October 19th, 2009
You can’t open a magazine or turn on the television these days without spotting
a ToyWatch. At the weekend The Sunday Times Style magazine featured
the white Fluo Time Only FL01 as the latest must-have. Jules B
currently has one of the biggest selections of ToyWatches available online.
So what are you waiting for? Tick tock, click tock…
If (like me) you missed Saturday night’s X-Factor X-travaganza you fortunately
weren’t subjected to the sight of the scary twins singing and dancing badly in red
leather suits. Luckily however, I did catch the Sunday show (as did a record
15 million other people) and in-between cheering on Cheryl Cole and
cringing at Whitney Houston, I spotted not one but two of the contestants
sporting ToyWatches. (Thankfully it wasn’t John and Edward…)
Rikki and Loyd (both Cheryl’s boys) were wearing the latest ToyWatches -
a black Chrono Plasteramic FL19 and yellow large Jelly JY06 respectively.
Being a North East company born and bred, everyone at Jules B is of course
firmly on team Cheryl. Whether you’re a fan of her work music-wise, there’s no
denying her cutting edge and inspired style choices – on and off stage. This week
we were particularly loving the red military jacket with super-sharp shoulder pads.
9 out of 10 for the Geordie girl done good. If she’d topped the ensemble off with a
matching Toy Watch we would have given her top marks.
Channelling Chanel
Friday, October 16th, 2009
It’s the latest celebrity endorsement that’s got the fashion world divided.
Yet I personally think Karl Lagerfeld got it just right when he made
Lily Allen the face of the new Chanel Cocoon accessories line.
Love her or hate her – you can’t deny she’s feisty, controversial and has unique style.
Much like Coco Chanel herself who I’m sure would rather have shared
a cigarette and a gossip with Lily rather than Kiera Knightley
or Nicole Kidman.
Both very beautiful ‘faces’ of Chanel but without an ounce
of the attitude and head-lining grabbing sartorial clout of Miss Allen.
As Lagerfeld said when Lily took centre stage at the designer’s spring/summer
2010 catwalk show at Paris Fashion Week this month:
“I love Lily Allen. She looks a lot like Gabrielle Chanel and she is a self-made woman.
She is cool, young and extremely witty,”
PS. If you’re not already Twittering, when you start make Karl your first friend.
His pompous pontifications on life and fashion are priceless.
Karl_Lagerfeld on Twitter. Followers: 127,765. Following: 0.
And you should totally check out (on a regular basis) the news section of the
official Chanel website for reportage and backstage pictures.
If you were to play the Word Association game and someone said “Chanel”
- the words ‘No 5, boucle jacket, quilt bag and pearls’ would surely follow.
The most iconic images of ‘Madame’ (as Lagerfeld refers to her still) feature layers
and layers of luminous pearls.
Part of the universal appeal of the Chanel look (and why it is copied over and over again by designers)
is that twenty-some-things like Ashlee Simpson and style-leaders in their fourties like Sarah Jessica Parker
can take elements of the Chanel and make it their own. That’s the beauty of well-executed accessorizing.
And it doesn’t have to cost the earth. You can channel Chanel (not exactly on the cheap)
but without re-mortgaging your home.
Browse our full collection of Adele Marie costume jewellery including Chanel-inspired
pearl necklaces and bracelets. Whether you go for one statement multi-strand necklace
or opt for the full-on look with ribbons and corsages and cuffs – there’s tons
to choose from and you’ll be seriously amazed at the prices.
The short white boucle jacket is a Chanel classic and a designer alternative should
be a wardrobe must-have for every girl. The one below is couture. Translation: unaffordable.
But don’t despair.
At Jules B we’ve found the perfect substitute from Tibi, the luxury US brand renowned
for 5th Avenue chic blended with Euro-chic style. An investment jacket that will last a lifetime.
(And with one zero less on the price tag than the Chanel original.)
Timeless with black cigarette pants and pumps.
Or totally on-trend with ripped skinny jeans and sky-high boots.
Slip into this Tibi jacket, pile on the pearls and wear with attitude
for a designer (yet affordable) take on Parisian-cool Chanel style.
Ooh la la.
Toy Story
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year
you will have noticed a new kid on the block in the world of watches.
The ToyWatch phenomenon has been gradually sweeping the globe with
everyone wanting a piece of the action on their wrists.
They’ve been described as a cross between “a Swatch and a Rolex.”
Ultra-light and hi-tech they’re modern, stylish and eye-catching.
Jules B brings you the ultimate fashion watch.
Made of a mixture of ceramic and plasteramic in all the colours of the rainbow.
Mother-of-pearl faces, bezels in brushed steel, glossy cermai
the unisex ToyWatches start at £124.99 for the classic Fluo Time Only and go right up to
£974.99 for the White Mavi Ceramic Chrono with real diamond markers.
Indeed something for everyone.
The combination of different sizes and styles allow you to browse according to ‘look’
as opposed to for men or women.
The latest addition to the ever-growing brood is the Jelly watch.
The small jelly watch is £114.99 and has an interchangeable sporty silicone strap.
Additional straps costs £28.99 so you can experiment with different colour combinations
and have a new watch for every day of the week if you so wish.
Genius.
You know an item has crossed over into must-have territory when the celebrities
want a piece of the action. And you don’t get a more A-list endorsement than
America’s first lady Michelle Obama.
What’s interesting about this particular thumbs-up is that unlike most other brands
that send out hundreds of freebies to celebrities in the hope one will be
papped wearing their wares, ToyWatch don’t operate like this.
No-one is paid (or bribed) to shout about the label. Their is no ‘face’ of Toy Watch.
The rich and famous love them as much as us civilians and want one of their very own.
The Chanel J12 watch is one of the most coveted luxury watches on the market.
It’s £3125 and currently sparkles on the wrists of celebrities such as Kiera Knightley,
Lily Allen and Cheryl Cole.
Let me introduce you to the equally gorgeous and slightly more affordable
ToyWatch FL33WH. This Small Fluo ToyWatch has got the same
sporty look face and sleek chic lines of the Chanel J12.
(Just minus the diamonds.)
A fun alternative to the real thing.
So ‘in fashion’ are these Toy Watches, last month a special limited edition
London Fashion Week watch was created to celebrate 25 years of LFW
and coincide with the opening of the first stand alone Toy Watch shop in the UK.
They’re taking over the world.
You never know, there may be a Toy Watch store opening near you soon.
So (toy) watch this space…
Paul Smith blogs about fashion. And then some.
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
If you want to get inside the head of a true fashion maverick who
keeps the flag flying for eccentric Brit style with REAL heritage and craftsmanship -
then check out the excellent blog of our very own Paul Smith. Jules B has stocked Paul Smith
and the various accessories and diffusion ranges for both men and women
since the very beginning and the collections continue to go from strength to strength.
(The Paul Smith London range of men’s formal shirts is a best seller every season.)
Check out his always inspiring posts which are crammed with photographs,
great quotes, recommendations and random trivia. Whatever is on this man’s mind
is worth a glimpse. It could be anything from wishing Bruce Springsteen
a Happy Birthday to recounting the book signing he held for Vic Reeves
in the iconic Floral Street Paul Smith store in London this week.
This ‘fashion’ (in heavily inverted commas) blog is so much more
than whose wearing what with what. It’s not just about the clothes,
it’s everything that makes Smith tick, snapshots of his creative vision,
where his most brilliant ideas have come from.
The instantly recognisable Paul Smith multi-stripe has become
a classic in the world of design not just fashion. Our favourite Paul Smith
must-have accessory featuring the multi-stripe this season is this quirky dog lead.
The perfect gift for the stylish man’s best friend.
(As modelled on our yet-to-be-named studio dog – any suggestions?)
Here’s a recent photo from his blog of the great man himself getting down and dirty
on the latest Paul Smith fashion shoot. This snap shows just how hands-on he is
with all aspects of the brand.
“On Tuesday I photographed my spring 2010 show collections for
Men and Women. I wanted the photographs to have a strong,
optimistic feeling and so built a set with vibrant colours.
I managed to shoot around 3000 images in one day,
which will be seen in magazines in the January issues.”
Still with his finger firmly on the pulse, he is constantly involved in unique
fashion/art/music projects, attacking each new venture with infectious enthusiasm
and a genuine love for what he does. A true English gentleman in dress and demeanour.
Not many international fashion designers (over the age of 30) take the time
to document their day-to-day working endeavours and make a
connection with their audience that reads (and looks) like a diary.
His is everything a great blog should be – passionate, personal and prolific.
Sir Paul, we salute you.
These boots are made for walking.

What do you get when you cross the fashion phenomenon everyone’s talking about
and the most popular footwear on the planet? The new range of Fit Flop winter boots that’s what.
They’ve got the look of an Ugg with all the health benefits of a Fit Flop.
Genius.
.Jules B brings you the new collection of winter boots from Fit Flop.
Available to buy now and exclusively pre-order.
Love them or hate them there’s no denying the popularity of Ugg boots
and other sheepskin boot brands.
They’re certainly not the most stylish item I own.
I don’t put them in the same league as my biker boots or cowboy boots or ankle boots
as official members of my wardrobe. Up until now an Ugg-style boot was strictly functional outerwear.
They’re what you pull on when it’s cold outside. They keep me warm and are ridiculously comfy.
I regarded them as an essential item not a sartorial choice.
Until now.
Imagine my delight when our buying team came across the perfect Ugg replacement
that does more than just keep you warm – these boots actually make you thinner
and they look great too. Those clever people at Fit Flop who invented the magical fit-flops
that banish cellulite and tone your bum and leg muscles (check out the official Fit Flop website
for genuine testimonials) have brought out a range of winter boots. But how do they work?
Here’s the science part!
The brains behind the brand is Marcia Kilgore who founded
cult beauty haven Bliss Spa.
She also created the celebrity-favourite Soap and Glory beauty range
which has a dedicated fan-base (including myself) who love the quirky packaging
and fun product names. My personal favourite is the skin-smoothing body-buffing
‘Scrub of your Life.’
Not content with ruling the beauty world and solving our body woes with the Fit Flop
technology – Kilgore is now branching into footwear with fashion edge.
Coming soon are the funky metallic Snugger moon-boots to really finish off your
eighties revival wardrobe. They’re superlight with puffy-padded upper and faux fur lining
– as the press release says “they’re part hip hip and all FitFlop.”
The Snugger boots haven’t even hit the shops yet but are available to pre-order
at Jules B online now. Due to popular demand (we already have waiting lists
in our North East stores) we’re putting a limited amount of the
Fit Flop Snugger boots online now for our website customers to purchase before anyone else.
This is a very special service and guarantees your Snugger boots will be winging
their way to you very soon – delivery is due in the next 2 weeks.
So don’t miss out – order now.
Wear with a sleek little Pinko puffa jacket or Dom and Ruby shearling gilet
for a chic après-ski look – think Elle Macpherson in Mirabel gliding effortlessly
through the snow from the slopes to the cocktail bar.
(For some packing inspiration to ensure you look stylish on the slopes check out this
great feature from the US Vogue online article archives.)
All the Fit Flop shearling boots have an all-rubber outsole that’s anti-skid
for tackling icy pavements as the nasty wintry weather sets in. Made of 100%
double faced breathable Shearling that’s water and stain resistant (as well as super-cosy)
these are the Rolls Royce of sheepskin boots.
The short Mukluk sheepskin is available in black, chocolate and chestnut.
The Short Mukluk boots can be folded down to show the luxe furry lining.
The bottom-toning muscle-loading sole with patent-pending micro-wobble technology
make the Fit Flop boots much more hard-wearing than Uggs.
And is there a worse sight (in footwear terms) than an Ugg boot that’s been worn to death,
the back heel barely existing anymore and the sheepskin going bald round the sides?
A true fashion crime.
The press are calling them “the Uggs that give you a workout”
(featured recently in Grazia Tried and Tested) and we can testify to that –
the entire Jules b team is walking to work in their Fit Flops and feeling the benefits.
Designed to be worn barefoot to maximise the cushioning and warmth of the sheepskin
and to best deliver the Microwobbleboard workout they’ve been specially engineered
with Agion antibacterial (and odour eliminating) technology.
These guys have thought of everything. Fashionable, functional and cute to boot?
I think I’m converted.
