We all know Kristen Stewart has exploded in the media over the past 2 years and is fast becoming a
style icon among young women. The casual/grunge look she channels daily is easily imitated
with jeans and T-Shirts, along with her trademark converse or trainers.
Plus, with the release of the next Twilight Saga trailer for Eclipse, the media is following the
stars of the film and once again she is snapped in LA wearing lace up style trainers.
Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed have got their relaxed style spot on!

Whilst searching for Tibi posts online, The Daily Obsession’s blog offered
a fabulous review of the catwalk show, drawing on the “simple strappy dresses in pastel hues”
and the “smattering of bright floral, silky slips and peg-leg trousers.”
“ Clean and classic, the designer, Amy Smilovic, only accessorised with simple sandals,
but didn’t spare the use of color, using bright red and turquoise throughout the collection in
forms of jackets, pants and shorts, while pastel colored garments added a nice contrast. “

Among the many well dressed celebrity men at this years 82nd Academy Awards was British-Irish Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis, surprisingly. The Oscar winning actor shocked photographers and fans alike
when he arrived in a stylish black tux finished with shawl collar and piped edge.

The tux especially designed for him by British fashion designer, Sir Paul Smith and
was far from his usual eccentric and slightly bohemian style. Let’s not forget that he has previously
turned up on the Red carpet in head-to-toe tweed! Thankfully he left his tweed at home for a more
conservative tux, white shirt and bow tie. Paul Smith who showed at London Fashion Week in February
this year said he was “delighted” to make a suit for Lewis, whose “effortless style” he admires.

Last night the entire Jules B team (plus two vans full of clothes)
crossed the Tyne Bridge to the Stadium of Light for the Fashion
Strikes charity event. A star-studded night of fashion and
fund-raising with Sunderland players and models taking to
the catwalk in aid of the SAFC Foundation.
Mislaid diamond rings, panic bronzer touch ups, fighting
over accessories… And that was just the boys.
With one of us per model you’d think it would be a breeze.
How difficult can it be to help a fully grown man get
dressed (and undressed) anyway? When you have about
30 seconds between each outfit change and you’re
trying to keep control over a group of guys who are
all pals, all psyched up and all raring to go – believe
me, it isn’t easy.! But it was definitely a lot of fun.
This was the second Fashion Strikes event for the SAFC
Foundation which helps more than 30,000 children
across the area, using the power of football to reach out
to kids with educational schemes. Captain Lorik Cana
explained how it was a chance for the team to give
something back to the city that supports the team so
passionately.

“Our most important job is on the pitch, but our duty
is not just to play football but to be an ambassador for
the club,” he explained. And the club should be very
proud of all their ambassadors who got involved last
night. The players were a pleasure to work with and
happily chatted with everyone backstage – signing
autographs and posing for pictures on camera phones
with the hair dressers and make-up artists from Reds

And it wasn’t just a night of footballing heroes – Olympic
boxing champion Tony Jeffries joined the likes of Anton
Ferdinand, Nyron Nosworthy and Kenwyne Jones on
the catwalk. Plus X Factor finalists Miss Frank performed
on stage, as did mid-fielder Andy Reid who impressed
everyone with a solo guitar and singing performance
of Snow Patrol and Beatles tracks.

“The event is about having fun and raising valuable
funds for the foundation,” he said. “All the lads are
very proud of the work the foundation do, they make
a massive difference to kids in the city.”

Backstage was a mix of chaos, concentration and crimpers.
The boys were in their element, larking around and in
fits of laughter when one of the players (who shall
remain nameless) had difficulty doing up a pair of suit
trousers that were ‘a bit Bramble’. Tight: Titus Bramble:
(Useful football rhyming slang for you there.)

There was nearly a crisis when one of the hat’s selected for
Kenwyn Jones wouldn’t fit over his dreads and
temperatures were raised when (in true fashion style)
the start of the show ran 15 minutes late so we had
14 very hot men in a very hot room standing around
in three piece suits and overcoats waiting to get on
the catwalk.
The girl models may have been a quieter bunch but
they had their fair share of fashion drama to keep
them on their toes. The Pinko collection arrived from
Italy literally in the nick of time so a lightening fitting
and last-minute adjustments were called for, and
luckily went without a hitch. The black cocktail
dress with embellished padded shoulders looked
incredible on Anna who wasn’t just modelling
but also organized the whole show through her
events company Butterfly Blue. Big thank you Anna
and good luck on your wedding day next week!
Jayne Middlemiss headed back to her North East
roots to host the event and lucky guests bid for exclusive
auction items which included goalkeeper gloves signed
by Craig Gordon and lunch with Anton Ferdinand
and Darren Bent. Last year, the night raised over
£16,000. The figures raised last night aren’t in yet
but let’s hope they beat that last year.
Team JB didn’t make it out the front during the show
as we were too busy flinging clothes at half-naked men
and helping them on with their box-fresh William Hunt
shoes but there was a lot of whooping and cheering
coming from the audience so I think it’s safe to say it
was a huge success. The biggest cheer came when the
boys paraded down the catwalk in jeans, unzipped
Ed Hardy leather jackets and, well, not much else actually.
But don’t worry we’ve got the whole show on film plus
some great backstage footage which we’ll be posting on
the blog soon. You may even catch a glimpse of the two
players play-fighting in the corner over who got to carry
the pimp cane for their final Holland Esquire outfit.
Like I said, boys and their toys…

SJH
In the depths of the English countryside, on a gloomy autumn day, some
very well-dressed (predominantly male) enthusiasts are gathering from
around the world for a day of speed and style. The bad weather is being
discussed in hushed tones but there’s no dampening the spirits of this lot.
The location of this gathering is the Goodwood Motor Circuit in deepest,
greenest Suffolk – in operation for more than 60 years and home to the
Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival. Everyone is here to drive a
range of Aston Martin supercars or at least watch from the sidelines in a
mix of terror and awe. Some of these cars regularly reach speeds of
200mph and beyond. Hence the preoccupation with the weather -
a touch of rain on the track could make all the difference.
There is a time trial in single-seater Caterham sportscars, a speed lap with
Aston Martin Racing driver Stefan Mucke, a pit-stop experience on the
Aston Martin Racing Le Mans model, and a bit of pottering around – on the
Goodwood track and the public road – in cars that go from zero to 60mph in
little more than four seconds.
It’s enough to bring the most reserved of gentlemen to life, and there are
a few of those gathered today. Top dog is gentleman extraordinaire
Jeremy Hackett, the soft spoken founder of menswear firm Hackett.
Not the most obvious speedster but Hackett’s company has a tie-up with
Aston Martin Racing and the main man himself not only attends
the festival, he took the lead this year in the driving stakes,
with an aggressive lap in the Caterham cars.

Further proof that Jeremy Hackett is a style icon - this picture appeared on The Sartorialist last year. Click to see more from The Sartorialist.
The Hackett brand is emblazoned on Mucke’s kit as well as the rest of the
Aston Martin team – even on the fireproof suits. A range of polo-shirts,
jumpers and jackets from the Hackett Aston Martin Racing collection
are available to buy now at Jules B online.
![jeremy_hackett [1600x1200] jeremy_hackett [1600x1200]](http://www.julesb.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/jeremy_hackett-1600x1200.jpg)
Jeremy Hackett. To read more about the man and the brand click here for the Hacket London official website.
Hackett is an old-school tailor who opened his first store more than
25 years ago on the New King’s Road in London. Hackett is now owned
by Pepe, with dozens of stores around the world and a loyal following
for what he calls his ‘‘essential British kit’’, which stretches from clothing
to cufflinks, luggage and men’s grooming products. Hackett is something
of a star; in Japan recently, he says – slightly bemused – that he was asked
by a customer to sign one of his Aston Martin Racing jackets.

Sherlock Holmes the new Guy Ritchie film starring Robert Downet Jnr and Jude Law out on Boxing Day. Old school english gentleman styles. I predict a huge style following. Click here to read more about the film at The Guardian online.
Hackett’s mantra seems to have set the fashion tone for the day at
Goodwood, with lots of stylish tweeds, cords, button-down shirts and
a wool cardigan or two in evidence – even on the Italians and Portuguese.
One larger-than-life guest of Hackett’s has travelled from Germany
in plus-fours, knee-length socks, a tweed waistcoat and red brogues.
Whoever said the English gent look is dead and buried should take a
trip to Goodwood next year.
Jeremy Hackett, 56, founded the eponymous gentlemen’s outfitters in 1983,
with a shop on New King’s Road in London selling vintage clothes and accessories.
Twenty-six years later, he is the chairman of the global Hackett empire.
He lives in Stockwell, London, with his two sussex spaniels,
Charley, 16, and Browney, seven.
Daily routine I usually get up at 6.30am, make a cup of tea and walk the dogs in the park.
I then go through all my emails around 8.30. I have a column on the Hackett website called
Ask Jeremy where people ask me style-related questions such as
‘Can I wear brown shoes with a grey suit?’ and ‘I’m getting married tomorrow, what do I wear?’
I then go to the office or to our shop in Sloane Street, where I attend product meetings.
Then there’s always lunch with journalists and people in the business.
After work I head home to walk the dogs again.
Getting dressed I used to iron my own shirts but when I gave up smoking years ago
I made a deal with myself: the money I saved on not buying cigarettes
could go towards getting my shirts laundered. (The only way I could benefit from
giving up was to have something really positive come out of it. I haven’t smoked
cigarettes since but I do smoke cigars now – Hoyo de Monterrey No.2,
which I buy from Davidoff on the corner of Jermyn Street.)
I always wear a jacket or a suit because they provide structure to my terrible shape.
If I wear a sweater or just a shirt, I feel sloppy.
I would never wear a T-shirt in London because I would look dreadful and I’m 56.
Tweed I have accumulated lots of tweed jackets over the years.
I really like the Horse and Hound tweed that we did with the magazine.
My current favourite is the Tokyo tweed in grey, navy and cornflower blue
(main picture). I was in Tokyo a few months ago with work and we took some
lightweight cloths and just a few very heavy English tweeds for the window-dressing,
not thinking they’d want them. Nearly every person ordered in the heavy tweed saying,
‘Very English, very nice.’ I’ve covered my furniture in tweed because you can brush it
and the dirt comes off, which is good for the dogs.
On the wall My favourite painting (above) was done in the 1920’s by
Edward Wolfe, one of the Bloomsbury Group. I bought it nine years ago
fromm the Millinery Works in Islington, which had a special exhibition of his work.
Most of the art in my house is from the 1930’s and 50s or from Russia.
I also have a Tracey Emin.
Collections I tend to accumulate elephants (main picture and above)
from all over the world, as well as cufflinks (below).
My favourites are the Charley and Browney ones, that we now make at Hackett.
I’ve bought lots of vintage pairs from the 1940s and 50s in flea markets
around the world. Nicky Haslam says that cufflinks are common.
I don’t listen to him. He say’s everything is common.
I think it’s common to say everything is common.
Bronze lady There was a famous dandy in the 1950s called Bunny Rodgers,
who was incredibly eccentric, dressed top to toe in Saville Row.
When he died they had a big sale at Sotheby’s of his clothes and effects,
and I went along to have a look. I thought this bronze sculpture (above)
was interesting so I circled it in the catalogue then completely
forgot about the sale. Two months later I was walking down Fulham Road
and there it was in the window of an antiques shop and I thought,
‘Well, I’m meant to have it.’
Gadgets I’m not really a gadget person but I do love my M8 Leica camera (above).
It’s a proper camera. It’s digital, and I’m not a whiz at all but I can download
my photos on to my computer. I took a really great picture of my two dogs
eating with their heads in their bowls and ears flopping out. I made it into postcard
whichI sent to people to thank them for lunch or dinner.
Style hero I think David Hockney has a great look (above). He’s always quite shambolic,
but his outfits have obviously been thought about and it never looks contrived.
He mixes things up nicely and adds a bit of colour here and there, funny braces or odd socks.
It’s part of his persona, which is why it looks so good.
Horses When I lived on the Wilton Estate in Wiltshire I kept a horse called Cassie in their stables.
I was allowed to ride in the parkland and I’d get up early at the weekend
and go down to the stables and hack out into the park. It was magic.
I felt I was in one of those 18th-century paintings (below).
I stopped riding because I broke my leg quite badly and lost my confidence.
Words taken from interview by Sophie Robinson The Telegraph magazine 5th December 2009.

Ed Hardy jackets are an OK! celebrity favourite. Not for
the faint-hearted (or anyone wanting to blend in with the
crowd) these leathers are guaranteed to get you noticed.
In fact, you’ll probably get hounded by autograph-hunters
thinking you’re famous. Team with a pair of huge shades to
complete the celebrity-incognito look.
GO WEST
ED HARDY LAUNCHES WESTFIELD STORE
Celebrity guests flocked to Westfield London for the launch
of the capital’s first Ed Hardy store, which was opened by OK!
favourite Peter Andre. Ali Bastian from Hollyoaks, Lauren Budd
and Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace were among the stars enjoying
cocktails, Christian Audigier champagne and canapes as the
Ed Hardy models strutted down the catwalk. After the show,
the party continued at London club Whisky Mist.
It’s that time of year again… The doors of the Celebrity Big Brother house have opened
(and swiftly closed again) locking in 10 famous (and not-so-famous) faces for 3 weeks
of silly tasks, bickering, soul searching and hopefully some breakdowns.
But could one contestant on the love it or loathe it ‘game show’ already have it in the bag?
Bookie Ladbrokes have set the odds with Vinnie Jones down as 5/2 favourite to win.
The football hard-man turned actor is the highest paid housemate according to the
News of the World which reported he is being paid £350,000 for taking part,
twice as much as last year’s eventual winner Ulrika Jonsson. Spokesman for Ladbrokes
David Williams said: “Vinnie looks like the perfect Big Brother star. He’s got attitude,
personality and is likely to shake the house to its foundations.”
Let’s hope so. I personally place much higher odds than 5/2 on Vinnie taking a swing at
Alex Reid (Jordan’s on/off cross-dressing boyfriend) before the series is out.
Now that WOULD be TV gold.
Ever with our fashion head on…. we couldn’t help but notice Mr Jones
sporting a very fine trilby as he made his entrance into the house.
Very old school gangster wrapped up in gentlemanly styles.
A Jules B favourite look if ever there was one epitomised by Bailey.
Founded in 1922 the Bailey Hat Company is steeped in heritage.
For an authentic American hat look no further than Bailey for its
original men’s hats. From Hollywood A-list celebrities to American elites,
all men craved to be seen in a Bailey hat. Throughout its 87-year history,
the Bailey Hat Company has earned an exceptional reputation by
continually providing its customers with unparalleled quality and
craftsmanship, as well as sophisticated industry-leading designs.
Another Vinnie high-light was the oh-so casual
way he told Stephanie Beacham (aka the poshest lady in the world
- who else pronounces forehead ‘forrid’?! – probably only the queen)
that he lived on Mulholland Drive. As a question.
Like this: “Mulholland Drive?”
As if maybe she hadn’t heard of it and it wasn’t the most famous address in Hollywood.
Brilliant.
Elettra Wiedman Rossellini, 26, is the beautiful, big-haired, brainiac daughter
of legendary actress Isabella Rossellini and Jon Wiedmann,
a Harvard-educated executive at Microsoft who was a model himself back in the day.
(Talk about good genes.) He and Rossellini met on a Calvin Klein shoot –
possibly the coolest and aesthetically pleasing, how-did-your-parents-get-together? story ever.

A completely unnecessary gratuitous shot of Jamie Dornan and Eva Mendes modelling for the most recent Calvin Klein campaign.
The term ‘model student’ is sickeningly applicable to this girl on so many levels.
Masters in Biochemistry? Check. Fluent in Fench and Italian? Double check.
Face of international fashion and beauty campaigns such as Lancome, Abercrombie
and most recently Hoss? Check, check, check… You get the idea.
The story goes that the president of Lancome saw one of her teen modelling
shots (taken by iconic American photographer Bruce Weber. Who else?)
and went after signing her up oblivious of the “mum connection” as Elettra puts it.
While this is a LITTLE hard to believe considering Mamma Rossellini
was the face of Lancome for 14 years – it isn’t difficult to see
why the brand fell over themselves getting her on board.
Lancome is coincidentally my beauty brand of choice. Their eye make-up
remover and tinted moisturiser are the BEST. Plus, the Lancome
girls in Boots of Eldon Square in Newcastle are the most helpful and
lovely sales team and I wouldn’t dream of changing brands or going
anywhere else for my beauty fixes. (Except Space NK for the odd thing.)
Get all your Lancome treats RIGHT NOW from Boots.com and
keep collecting those points. I heart my Advantage Card.
Rossellini the Younger’s saint-like status (doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, trains five or six times a week)
is elevated even further with a reputation as a genuinely conscientious ‘green’ model.
She insists that Lancôme offset the carbon footprint created by the
air travel she does for them.
‘Our entire system of living is built on an un-environmentally friendly model,’
she says. ‘I’m studying it so I can understand more how I can help big
companies change, or help governments change, or people change their lifestyle.’
If all this sounds too good to be true and you’re beginning to think
– life isn’t fair is it? Some chicks really do have it all. My life is rubbish etc etc.
Bear this fact in mind: one of the most interesting things about this super-girl
(and something she doesn’t bring up in interviews) is that from the ages of 12-17
she suffered from scoliosis and had to wear a back brace for 23 hours a day. Every day.
Suddenly, the charmed life doesn’t look so charming after all.

Follow the 8 simple steps below to enjoy fame, fortune and a fabulous wardrobe.
(Absolutely NO money-back guarantee.)
Step 1) Descend from many different and interesting ancestories.
Step 2) Make your name in a HUGE money-spinning blockbuster.

Brian Austin Green (AKA David) from the original Beverley Hills 90210 cast. The new one's pretty good too and worth a watch.
Step 3) Start going out with an ex-teen-idol.

Could this be the un-named stripper who Miss Fox allegedly fell in love with while still in her teens? Or (as she ALLEGEDLY then confessed) did she totally make it all up to get silly male journalists hot-under-the-collar? Yep, I think so too. And weirdly, I like her more for it.
Step 4) Tell the world press that you kissed a girl. And liked it.
Step 5) Have lots of personally meaningful tattoos.
Eg Marilyn Monroe’s face and dramatic lines of prose like:
“There once was a little girl who never knew love
until a boy broke her HEART”
Deep, man.
Step 6) Say controversial things about drugs in interviews.
Step 7) Get compared to the sexiest woman on the planet.

The Jules B team are shocked and saddened to hear that the British fashion designer
Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life.
The 40-year-old committed suicide just three years after his close friend,
Isabella Blow – who plucked him from obscurity and helped him become a star – killed herself.
His death was confirmed by a source at McQueen’s office this afternoon:
‘It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.’
At the time of writing, different online sources have conflicting reports as to whether the designer
was found at his London or Paris home.
The youngest of six children, Alexander Lee McQueen was born in the East End.
He trained in tailoring in Savile Rowe and one legendary urban-fashion myth
is that the provocative young McQueen would sew lewd messages into the
lining of bespoke suits made for aristocracy including Prince Charles.
He went on to have an illustrious career in his own right and holds the distinction
of being named British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003.
His death comes days before the start of London Fashion Week
and weeks before he was due to unveil his new collection at Paris Fashion Week on March 9.
He was famously discovered by Blow, the outlandish fashion director at Tatler magazine.
His talent was matched only by his capacity to shock and he was swiftly
crowned the ‘enfant terrible’ of the fashion world. He went on to be awarded the CBE,
as well as being named International Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards.
Tragically, Miss Blow killed herself in May 2007 after taking an overdose of weed killer.
She had battled with depression most of her adult life and in the weeks before her
death had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. McQueen denied rumours of a rift between the pair
at the time of her death, saying: ‘It’s so much b******s. These people just don’t know
what they’re talking about. They don’t know me. They don’t know my relationship with Isabella.
It’s complete bull****. ‘People can talk; you can ask her sisters.… That part of the industry,
they should stay away from my life, or mine and Isabella’s life. What I had with
Isabella was completely disassociated from fashion, beyond fashion.’
McQueen was so distraught by Isabella’s death that he dedicated his
spring summer 2008 show at Paris fashion week to his late friend.
Openly gay since a young age, McQueen, (who once described himself as the ‘pink sheep of the family’)
left school at 16 and after various stints working for fashion labels all over the
world he finally found a focus and enrolled at the prestigious Central Saint Martins fashion school in London.
Isabella Blow was in the audience at his graduation show and the rest is history.
Miss Blow had said: ‘My relationship with McQueen began in 1994,
when I went to a Saint Martins graduate show. I couldn’t get a seat,
so I sat on the stairs and I was just watching, when I suddenly thought: I really like those clothes,
they are amazing. It was his first collection and I knew I had to know this person.’
With this endorsement, McQueen set up his own label based in the East End of London.
His infamous ‘bumsters’ trousers (with super-low buttock-revealing waistband)
made him a household name and his extra-curricular antics with famous friends
such as Kate Moss ensured he was never out of the tabloid headlines.
He went on to be named head designer at Givenchy in 1996, succeeding John Galliano,
before joining forces with Gucci, who bought 51 per cent of his company.
Tributes and dedications have been flooding in via social networking sites such
as Twitter from his friends, colleagues and fans worldwide. It is a sad, sad day for the fashion universe,
which has lost one of its brightest, baddest, boldest stars.

Model/actor John Kortajarena plays a male gigolo in the film and also starred in one of Ford's add campaigns.

It’s the movie everyone’s talking about. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda
are back for another fabulous outing of Manolos and Men, Cocktails and Frock-tails.
Sex and the City 2 is out in April and here’s what we know: it’s set in London,
Big’s in it and the clothes are better than ever. Ah yes, the clothes.
When news of the film began to surface, there was much reportage in the press
that in light of the recession SJP had said it would be ‘inappropriate to showcase
the designer clothes’ SATC had become famous for. However, she had a battle on
her hands with Patricia Field uber-stylist and designer-clothes addict who
has worked on the show since the very beginning. Field is alleged to have said
“I don’t use the recession as a reference point for my creativity”
and thus two of the most influential ladies in the fashion world were at loggerheads.
However, it seems a compromise was met which in true Carrie style got me to wonder….
We watch the show to see the most beautiful, most lust-worthy,
most only-in-our-wildest-dreams clothes. We don’t want real. Or do we?
You can argue that Carrie wears just as many vintage finds as designer exclusives
and much is made of her $5 Bargain Bin obsession. Check out New York’s
finest vintage emporium Resurrection – a favourite of vintage-loving celebs.)
So granted it’s not always about the dollar. But in terms of accessibility
and ‘getting the look’, if you think about it these second-hand gems are even
MORE obscure and less attainable than the latest Chanel bag.
A fashion conundrum for sure.
Magazines are always doing their best to show us the ‘steal’ version of Carrie’s
looks but sometimes a girl wants the real thing don’t we? And you’d be hard
pushed to name check an item of her clothing over the past 10 years
you or I could have afforded. If you wanted the exact same dress or coat or shoes
that Carrie was rocking (and who doesn’t?) you had to be very, very rich.
Until now.

As the first pictures of SJP in character and in wardrobe began to appear
this summer, one look stood out. An amazing 70’s-style white dress. The world gasped.
Bloggerswent crazy, posting pictures on the internet within hours of the shots
hitting the press. Was it designer? Was it vintage? Turns out, it was both:
it was something old and new.
The label is Halston Heritage a new line launched by the US fashion house that
reinvents the original designs from the label’s disco heyday. And the best news?
Dresses start at £200. When you consider that some of Carrie’s previous outfits
have cost over £4000, the decision to go diffusion has been welcomed by
the show’s biggest fans. Us. The cash-strapped UK public. And rumour has
it that SJP is ACTUALLY on-board in a design capacity aswell…
Model-du-jour Dree Hemingway is the new face of Halston Heritage
adding much kudos to one of the most exciting label launches in recent years.

Mainline Halston is still alive and kicking (if you have a couple of thousands of
pounds to spend on a dress) and if not, the revitalized new Heritage line is a truly
beautiful collection and manna from heaven for fashionistas on a budget who
want to channel Carrie without going broke for Chanel.
It was heartening to see stars still making an effort on the red carpet despite the terrible weather.
Last night the premiere of Tim Burton’s new 3D film Alice in Wonderland took place in London
and the glitterati was out in full force. And flying the flag for British fashion to boot.
Three of the highest-profile figures of the night had all opted for Vivienne Westwood creations.
Helena Bonham Carter (who plays the Queen of Hearts in the film) was wearing a typically
whacky yet charming ensemble of frills and bows. Get Helena’s look in this
new season Hoss Intropia pleated fairy dress with embellishments.
In an interesting sartorialist twist – the other REAL life
royal lady in attendance, Camilla Parker-Bowles, had also gone Westwood.
Her choice of midnight blue full-length taffeta evening gown was more refined but
still had the trademark Westwood bustier and figure-hugging silhouette.
Enjoying the slightly non-safe choice of dress by an establishment figure…
Never mind the Queen of Hearts -it’s Camilla who rocks. She massively pulled it off and
demonstrated a master-class in age-appropriate dressing. Take note Barbara Windsor.
Dear, dear me… I can’t even begin to list what’s wrong with this.
At ANY age a shiny ill-fitting suit, cowboy boys and a funny little hat
is simply wrong.
The lovely Anne Hathaway (a celebrity usually completely off my style radar)
has risen in my esteem dramatically with her strapless sequin Westwood party dress
and low-maintenance hair. LOVED. In fact, I would have given her whole look 9 out of 10 if she
hadn’t gone so heavy on the eyes AND the lips. One or the other next time Anne.
Aside from ‘who will be my plus1?’ the most second most important question
you should ask yourself before a major (fashion) event should be –
does one go super-short or full-on-long? Once upon at time it was only ever
the old or the pregnant (or the boring) that went in for for long gowns. But then vintage
became as hot as the latest label to be seen in and re-creating old-school Hollywood
was all the rage. (See stalwarts Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Angelina Jolie etc etc.)
Then bright young thing Marion Cotillard rocked up to accept her Oscar in a stunning
full-length Jean-Paul Gaultier gown of mermaid-like delicate scales – and
it signalled the tide beginning to change. Fast forward to 2010 and with awards
season is upon us, it was interesting to see the ratio of hem-line lengths across the
board was way more 50/50 than ever before. And I’m all for it.
Very short has become VERY tacky. Synomous with a tabloid style of dressing
that’s all about making the front-page and not the style section. Teeny tiny dresses
scream ‘star of Hollyoaks’ or ‘appeared on last year’s Strictly come Dancing’
- ie low-brow and way down the alphabet list. Now I love Cheryl as much
as the next person but in my opinion Danni beat her hands down on last year’s
X-Factor with a selection of sleek old-school gowns fit for a screen-goddess.
Way cooler than the totally obvious boy-friendly dress formula of:
strapless+tulip-hem+mini=sexy. However, shorter can be the ultimate in
cocktail chic if the silhouette is knee-length and a shape that drapes rather than clings.
If you don’t believe ME, then at least listen to those knowledgeable types at Vogue:
“If it’s drama you are after go for a floor-length dress to give a classic
look with minimum effort, Emilio Pucci’s are just the fashionable ticket.
Take the modern approach and wear your hair undone and your eyes smoky;
it’s sexier, cooler and means no attention will be taken away from the dress.
Knee-length dresses are the young approach and this season come in
brilliant colours like emerald green, orchid and deep red, see Lanvin’s
for the ultimate in cocktail chic. Accessorise your dress with a matching
coloured head band, or look for a flirty mini dress as at Moschino and
then dress it down with ballet flats or quirky shoe-boots like our
cover girl Alexa Chung.”
And if you can’t afford Lanvin, Pucci or Moschino – Hoss Intropia, Milly and
Twenty8Twelve have done some very pretty shorter dresses this season.
Or if your intention is to create a dramatic entrance and some va va voom –
nothing beats a sweeping floor-length number for a classic look with minimum
effort. Again, try Hoss Intropia for on-trend print maxi-dresses to take
you glamorously into Spring. Take your pic from these long (and short) lovlies.
